initial proposal

Institution: Conde nast is an American media company founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast. The company attract more than 84 million consumers in print, 366 million in digital and 384 million across social platforms including Allure, Architectural Digest, Ars Technica, Backchannel, Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler, Epicurious, Glamour, GQ, Pitchfork, Self, Teen Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Wired.  I have chosen Condé Nast to publish my magazine as it is very popular and well known for publishing high end magazine brands .

Representation: I would like to represent my magazine in a positive way as most magazine brands sexualise women in order to get an audience and gain more customers. I would like to represent my magazine by showing the different types of fashion that can be used as some women view and interpret fashion in their own ways so can appeal to many women.  I would also like to present the idea that people can express them self through clothes and show how they express fashion in their own way.

Codes and conventions: In my magazine i will provide for my audience the most recent trends, outfits ideas, different ways that you can use fashion and more. This will appeal to the audience as now more people like to keep up with society’s trends and follow people who they aspire to be like due to the fear of standing out. I would like my magazine to not only be entertaining but also be helpful to maybe newcomers to the whole fashion aspect. On a typical known magazine eg vogue or elle you would usually see a beautiful well known celebrity on the front cover with the usual sell lines ‘50 great dresses for a night out’.

Genre: The genre for my magazine that I have chosen will be winter fashion. I will mostly be targeting women however a fraction will be aimed for men as well. I have chosen winter fashion as my genre because i  myself love winter outfit looks and am always looking for winter looks each year. I have chosen to start my target audience from 16 as again i love shopping for clothes and also love having nice warm outfits for christmas time.

Audience:  My audience that I will be targeting is women aged between 16 and 35 and social status of ABC1 which includes middle class people as my magazine is high street fashion.

Equipment

I will need the following equipment:

  • A Canon camera to take the images with
See the source image
  • Tripod- i will need to use a tripod for certain images eg long shot images to get a straight perfect shot (mainly for close ups)
See the source image
  • Light kit- the light kit is essential for my photo shoot because the model in my images will then stand out more in the photos and so that there will be no need to use the flash on the camera. The light kit is also better than natural light. Most magazine productions use a studio image on their front cover with a plain background which i am also aiming to do with my magazine.
See the source image
  • Reflectors- the reflectors will create light that will then reflect onto my models face for more of a glowing effect when taking outside location shots. This is good because if it is a rainy day with no sun the reflector can give you some light that you may need without using a light kit (good for outside images) and as my photo shoot will be taking place in the winter season this is essential.
See the source image
  • Computer- i will need a computer to transfer my images onto so I will then be able to see the images in more detail and be able to edit them or delete some if i need to do so.
  • Colour background– i will need a colour background sheet in order to make my magazine cover look more professional and create the typical magazine front cover look. I have chosen red because my magazine is winter fashion in which winter is around Christmas time and red a very Christmassy colour.

And I have also chosen light blue as it is a easy background colour to edit for example if I wanted white then I can lighten the background using photoshop or in design or if I wanted a darker blue i could just darken it using the same processes.

Masthead analysis

See the source image

The font for this glamour magazine is different from other magazines. The glamour magazine uses a more thicker and bold font however others use a more elegant and thin styled font to connote with the elegance of the magazine and that it produces high end fashion. This makes their style of their masthead unique and stand out as when the audience see the magazine they will know that the brand of the magazine is glamour. They have used a white colour for their title on this magazine cover so it stands out from the red colours and to their audience to catch peoples eye.

The usual vogue font is serif (with flicks) which shows the elegance of the brand. It is a large, tall, white stretched out font with the colour of the masthead being white against a blue background bringing it to stand out. Inside the letter ‘o’ of the masthead states to the audience that it is a Indian magazine. The vogue masthead I widely stretched out across the magazine cover and placed at the top of the cover showing its significance.

The font used in the Bazaar magazine is similar to the vogue design that being a serif, tall and large font which has connotations with luxury. The masthead is overlapping the image of the model which the audience can then clearly see who the brand is. I am aiming to create a magazine like this Bazaar magazine that having a very serious front cover close up image of a woman with a large bold and noticeable slogan as this professional typical magazine look will attract my target audience which is 16-30 year old women and how my audience my clear genre which is fashion.

In this vogue magazine cover they use two different fonts. For ‘teen’ masthead they use a bubble, bold and child like font connoting with teens. For the ‘vogue’ masthead they use the usual elegant font that being tall and serif. The teen typography is a light purple shade and the vogue is a pink shade which is stereotypically girls colours. Above the vogue typing they have stated that is the march collection magazine.

This Marie Claire masthead is a large bubble font similar to the glamour masthead font. The model stands in front of the masthead as the audience will know who the brand is already as it is a very popular make. The colour of the font is a pink shade with the month of when the magazine came out above the letters ‘re’.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
