Evaluation

Introduction:

For my digital magazine production I produced a high street womens winter fashion magazine. During this process I took on many production decisions and technical, activities, planning and minimise risks. My planning and decision making was produced and posted on my word press blog @elliebartlettmagazine.fashion. I overcame mistakes, risks and made positive changes to my magazine throughout the 6 week process.

Front cover:

Before creating my magazine in indesign i completed a sketch of what I was aiming for my front cover to look like at the end of the process. I had gathered several sell lines and got an idea from other magazines of what typical sell lines were shown. As the genre of my magazine is fashion i created most of my sell lines with the word ‘fashion’ in it to really show the reader that it is a fashion magazine. At the bottom of the magazine i used the sell line ‘new winter season fashion’ with fashion being in big bold writing. I then had added the essential parts like a barcode, a website link to which my audience can go online and read more, the date it came out and the price of my magazine. After I had designed my front cover I gained feedback from my peers of improvements and positive feedback. One point of feedback i got was to add one or two more sell lines in order to really catch the target audiences eye. From this feedback I added two more sell lines and rearranged what some of them said as they were too similar. This did make my magazine stand out more than it did. Another piece of constructive feedback was to enlarge my ‘Demure’ masthead so it takes up the whole width at the top. Enlarging my title on indesign made the page look a lot brighter and made my masthead stand out. Overall my magazine had good catchy sell lines that relate to the genre of my magazine and i added all the essentials to a magazine cover which was the barcode, price, title and any sort of social media platform that your audience can access.

Final product:

For my final front cover piece I changed each sell lines typography so each sell line can stand out from each other.I made significant words to the magazine to be red so they stand out to the audience in this case i made ‘holiday, christmas, 5 and power’ red. These words all show that my magazine is a Christmas winter magazine. For my image I have used a close up image of my model in which most fashion magazines do this. The use of the close up image makes the magazine stand out to the target audience and makes the cover look like a typical fashion magazine. I created my mathead to be widely spread across the top of the page in order for it to stand out more and beneath that place the month and year of when the magazine came out as people may only want specific seasonal outfits. I felt that this front cover was a success as I have created sell lines that really engage with the reader and tell them alot about what content will be in my double page spreads.

Double page spreads:

I looked at many double page spreads in order to get some ideas and again identify the typical look of a fashion double page spread. I went through significant changes within my double page spread process. My first sketch (1) of my DPS was very boring and did not look like it would be in a magazine. As you can see i only had one image on one of the DPS and the other DPS did not have the coulomb like text style which most magazine articles have. On the first double page spread i had very small box images which would not have been very clear to the audience however i rearranged it and used the same 3 images but enlarged them and placed them on the left side instead of the right. After receiving my feedback i changed the text in double page spread 1 into columns like how an article would be and include a large quote across the top of the right hand side so make the spread more exciting for the reader. After receiving feedback on double page spread 2 i added a photo onto the right side of the spread and created a title for the image on the left side page. When I had finished these double page spreads I decided to create a third one. I was going for a very simple and plain but modern and sophisticated look for example:

See the source image

After looking at other magazines I found that on one side of the DPS would be an enlarged image and the other side a slogan, title, quote ect. After planning and decision making this is what i created.

Final products:

My article on DPS 1 was a description of one of the trendy outfits I chose for my model to wear as it is essential for my article to relate to the genre of my magazine. I also wrote in my article a perfect gift guide essential for my audience. I disused price ranges and the product itself. I thought talking about the outfit and products, where its from and price ranges ect would appeal to my audience as it makes it easier for them to find the items of clothing or accessories. On the left side i used a large long shot image of the outfit being described which is important that they can see the clothing on a model. Like most fashion magazines, I added a short list of what the product is and where it is from. For this image I added the white bold title ‘The winter look’. In order for my audience to access other monthly magazine and social media platforms i added a link to a socia;l media platform so they can see more outfit ideas.

For my final second double page spread i used a collage layout for my images as most teen magazines do this for more of a polaroid look. These images are not too small and are a reasonable size for my audience to see. Next to each of these images i have again short listed the items of clothing including the price and where it came from. In regards to my article it features the life of a school girl studying fashion and design at college. I included this in my article as i felt that it could inspire others when joining collage or possibly others could relate to it. I also included a large white quote that I think can be very inspiring to those who love fashion. Similar to my first double page spread i have added an account to a social media platform so my audience can see more of my fashion ideas.

For my final third double page spread i created a plain and modern double page spread. This spread consisted of one large image with the items of clothing that the model is wearing beside her and a plain black page with another inspiring quote.

Target audience and genre:

I hit and decided my choice of genre through a planning mind map. I discussed the connotations of magazine genres for example music, health, cosmetics, fashion, teen, sport and fitness. I came to the conclusion that with my target audience being 16-30 year old women, a fashion genre would appeal to them more and i also know more about fashion than other possible genres. I also created my own research and planning on how I can make parts of my fashion magazine appeal to my audience more. My research had trendy items of clothing that I should include in my magazine and colours that will appeal to my audience. My magazine appeals to my target audience due to my connotations of my magazine covers. Firstly for my front cover i chose a close up of my model which is a young girl, appealing to my audience more as my target audience are young women as well.

Initial proposal:

The institution I chose was Conde nast which is an American media company founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast. The company attract more than 84 million consumers in print, 366 million in digital and 384 million across social platforms including Allure, Architectural Digest, Ars Technica, Backchannel, Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler, Epicurious, Glamour, GQ, Pitchfork, Self, Teen Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Wired.  I have chosen Condé Nast to publish my magazine as it is very popular and well known for publishing high end magazine brands .

I would like to represent my magazine in a positive way as most magazine brands sexualise women in order to get an audience and gain more customers. I would like to represent my magazine by showing the different types of fashion you may see in today’s society that can be used as some women view and interpret fashion in their own ways so can appeal to many women. I would also like to present the idea that people can express themselves through fashion and show how they express fashion in their own way. I also find fashion magazines, websites and social media platforms very helpful for myself and interested in trying new things out so I will know exactly what my target audience wants.

See the source image

I managed timing, personnel, creativity and finance using a weekly timetable over a 6 week time span. I grouped each task together being the most similar. I came to my decisions when creating a magazine through research into other magazine brands. I prepared for my magazine production by making a task list on which steps need to be completed in order to create the best magazine possible. This included for example analysing different masthead designs and identifying which ones are the norms when it comes to creating a magazine. Planning and doing research helped me to understand the connotations of magazines more and understand what an audience wants when creating your own magazine. Like with a fashion magazine, the audience wants to see unique and trendy outfits, outfit ideas, give details on where the outfit is from and the price of the item, interesting stories to read when out and about and seasonal outfit ranges.

I felt that my magazine went well and creating it was successful due to knowing what the target audience wants and what appeals to them. It is very important to know your readers. The content that you supply in your magazine is also very important because that is the main feature, people love reading interesting stories especially if they love fashion and are given a fashion based article. In this case this is what i supplied my readers with. The article I created was inspiring and gave tips to those who may want to start a fashion business. I felt that I dealt with problems along the way very reasonably. For example i gained a lot of feedback from my magazine about good and bad feedback. This meant I had room for improvement and that my magazine was not a magazine yet. This then resulted in me changing my magazine layout and design completely as it wasnt how i wanted it to look. After all of these changes I felt that my magazine looked like a real women’s fashion magazine.

However for future references, i would like to improve my ways of creating a magazine. One of my improvements will be creating an article more for my target audience and make sure it can appeal to each reader i target.

Platform considerations

I will use many different methods to distribute my magazine. this includes social media like snapchat, Facebook, twitter, Instagram and YouTube and have my magazine be promoted on billboards.

Firstly I will be using the social media platforms snapchat, Facebook, twitter and Instagram due to their popularity within the social media industry. they are used by many teens and my target audience as well. I will make accounts on all 4 platforms, posting information, images, videos etc of my magazine cover. These platforms can also be used to keep my followers/target audience up to date about the latest launches and the magazine itself.

My magazine will be distributed via an app, a website and a print copy that will be sold in shops. Before I started to design these platforms I did some research on other popular magazine brands to see what it should or could look like.

These are images of the vogue online app. As you can see they have provided drop down menus to make it easier when browsing on the app. It includes videos, news, catwalk, arts & lifestyle, beauty and fashion. When creating my app I would also like to chose videos, beauty, gossip news and a fashion dropdown menu as they can appeal to my target audience. when to come to design I am going to chose simple colours like the vogue app does as well.

My online website will be similar design and content to my mobile app.

When it comes to my print copy of my magazine, I will distribute the copies to local well known shops and next to underground stations as many pick them up on the go when traveling to work for example.

Planning of genre and audience

Planning for my genre:

To plan for my genre I firstly looked at many different types of magazine, this included sport, music, fashion, film, teen, gossip and health. I identified which genre would be the simplest to create meaning appeal to me more and which I knew more about. For me the magazine I like to read to are gossip, teen and fashion as they all can appeal to me more. so i then chose fashion as my genre of my magazine as I love reading fashion magazines and I know what the audience would want from it and how I can make it appeal to them more. The genre I chose was high street women’s fashion.

Planning for my target audience:

Again I done some research on what the most popular target audience is for a fashion magazine and what ages fashion appeals to more. looking at magazine like vogue, Elle and cosmopolitan for example I had worked out that the age ranges for all are around 16- 35 year olds. As I am within that age range I decided to make my target audience for my fashion magazine 16-30 year old women as I can identify their needs and wants.

Feedback

After feedback:

On my front cover of my magazine i firstly changed 2 of my sell line fonts making them differ from each other and not to similar. next relating to my feedback i heightened the bar code so it is not so hidden
For my double page spread all i changed was adding a title for one of my images

On my last double page spread i added a grey border onto the left page so it matches with the right side and enlarged the text on both sides of the spread to make it noticeable to the readers.

Typography choices

My typography choices are all very similar that being thin, popular and elegant. As big magazine brands like Vogue and Elle use the thin and elegant style I have chosen to as well because it is the typically magazine look. As my outfits that I have chosen in my magazine are elegant I would like my front cover to also represent that.

Production diary

Week 1: On my first week of producing my magazine cover and double page spread the first thing I completed was analyzing some existing mastheads like vogue, Elle and cosmopolitan. This was a good task to complete before making my own magazine as I give me ideas of what mastheads catches peoples eye and appeals to audiences. I listed and chose the equipment I would like to use for my photoshoot and explained why they are useful. I then wrote up my initial proposal. My initial proposal described the genre of my magazine that I have chosen which is women’s fashion, my audience that I will be aiming to target (16-30 year olds) and who will institute my magazine. lastly I presented my research and work on my initil proposal and audience profile to my class mates in which they gave me feedback on.

Week 2: On week 2 I created a moodboard in which I collected costume ideas, double page spread layouts, colour connotations, image pose ideas and props/costume ideas. This made creating my magazine more organized and the process quicker. I firstly done research on what outfits/props were popular in the fashion industry (trends) so my magazine can appeal to my audience more. I gathered bags, hats, jumpers, jackets, trousers and shoes ideas. Then see what poses are the typical look for a front cover magazine. I collected more close up images as that is what I found was more popular.

Next I gathered some name ideas and described which ones would have appealed more to my audience and had a deeper meaning to them. After I had chosen the name of my magazine which was ‘Demure’ I chose the style I wanted it to be. I wanted the masthead to stand out and have an elegant style to it like vogue does so in that case my decision was a Lora font. Then I chose the colour connotations for the typography of my magazine. This included the sell lines, masthead and any other additional writing. As my background of my front cover was light blue I decided that white was the best colour to chose as it would stand out to my audience against the blue background.

Week 3: Week 3 consisted of creating my audience profile (who am I targeting & why), article drafts that I like and my initial proposal which consist of a description of my genre, audience and institution representation. I decided for my audience to be aged between 16 and 30 as the same fashion styles can appeal to all ages in todays society. I chose article drafts that talked about all the different aspects of fashion and is from another persons perspective. I chose who would institute my magazine (Conde Nast) and my genre being women’s high street fashion.

Week 4: Moving on to the promotional side I collected several social media platforms in which I could use to promote my magazine. I chose twitter, Instagram and snapchat as it is most used by young women and I can create my own account on all of those platforms. Along with using social media platforms to promote my magazine I will also use billboards placed in popular locations like London for example. Next is type my pre-production documents risk assessment, location recce, budget sheet, call sheet, model release form and location contract. Lastly I took images of my photoshoot set up and explained why I had chosen that setup.

Week 5: On week 5 I created a contact sheet of all the images I had taken within my 2 photoshoots and using the contact sheet I it was then easier for me to chose my final images in which I chose a front cover image and 8 double page spread images. Knowing my layout of my double page spread and front cover I sketched out the designs and posted them on my blog.

Week 6: On the final week I had created a front cover draft and my double page spreads/Article drafts which was my final product. Using my drafts I gathered constructive feedback from my peers to then either improve my work or keep it as it is.

Cover drafts

Front cover draft:

I have created a typical women’s fashion magazine by using a close up shot with a serious looking young woman on the front cover. I have chosen again the usual sell lines that you would most likely see on a fashion magazine cover for example using the words ‘trendy, style, essential, season’

For my double page spread I have again used the typical magazine look that being a full A4 page of images on the left side and wring (article) on the right. I have also made my images look like they are polaroid images to make the magazine more unique ad stand out from the others.
For my second double page spread I have used the same look with an image on the left and small thumbnail images on the right with columns for my article. The left side of my double page spread is one image with a large masthead at the top of it ‘the winter look’. In the bottom left is a description of what the model is wearing which appeals to the audience significantly as they do then not have to search the internet for hours trying to find what the model is wearing. You can clearly identify the genre of this magazine which is fashion by noticing that I have noted down what the model is wearing in the large double page spread image which most magazine productions do. You can also tell that it is a fashion magazine by the image of my model and the way she is posing. She is doing the typical fashion model pose with her hand on her hip trying to show as much of her outfit as she can.

Image ideas

As you can see most of the images above are similar that being a close up shots of a famous woman looking very serious using their facial expressions. The producers of the magazines have made the person in the image the main focus in order to attract an audience. Like most magazine covers the women on the front are very serious and do very simple poses that simply being just staring straight into the camera in which my magazine cover will do the same. This may attract a greater and a wider range of audience as they can immediately identify that my magazine is high end due to having that typical front cover layout and design. I feel that when magazine brands use serious facial expressed women on their front cover of their magazine it can show the audience how serious they are about their looks and the fashion industry itself.
